Connect a wireless client and explore signal range

Join a prepared wireless network, obtain an IP address, test the gateway and inspect its ARP entry. Explore distance and signal settings, diagnose an out-of-range client and verify recovery. Radio values in this walkthrough are modelled for the lab; a cached ARP entry alone does not prove current reachability.

Narration transcript

The English narration in this video. Select a time to watch that moment.

  1. Start with a configured controller, a directly connected access point, and a wireless-capable host.

  2. Check that the wireless network is enabled before connecting a client.

  3. Select the host and open its WLAN Client settings in Properties.

  4. Saving client settings does not guarantee that the wireless connection succeeded.

  5. Enter the matching network name and key, then apply the changes.

  6. Verify the client and its serving access point in the controller's Monitoring page.

  7. An unavailable signal value is not a zero-strength measurement.

  8. A wireless association still needs a valid IP address and route to carry traffic.

  9. Test the connection by sending traffic to the lab gateway.

  10. Run arp dash a to see the gateway's IP address and MAC address on eth zero.

  11. Enable the teaching radio model when you want distance to affect wireless connectivity.

  12. These radio settings apply to the lab, including its wireless clients and access points.

  13. The displayed signal is modelled for this lab and is not a hardware measurement.

  14. Moving the client beyond the configured range can disconnect its wireless path.

  15. The wireless ping fails while the wired control still reaches its own gateway.

  16. Move the client back into range and verify that connectivity returns.

  17. Zooming and panning change your view, rather than the modelled distance.

  18. Disabling distance and signal returns this lab to its supported non-distance behaviour.

  19. Reopen the lab to confirm the saved settings and check the connection again.
